Logbook Service vs Basic Service: Which One Does Your Car Actually Need?
6 May 2026 // 4 min read // Peninsular Motors, Crestmead
“Just a basic service, thanks” saves money on the day. Sometimes that’s fine. Sometimes it quietly costs you a warranty claim, a resale premium, or an engine. Here’s the difference in plain English.
What a basic service is
A basic (or “general” or “minor”) service is usually an engine oil and filter change plus a visual safety check - fluids, tyres, lights, wipers. It keeps the engine lubricated and catches obvious problems. That’s all it promises.
What a logbook service is
A logbook service follows the exact schedule the manufacturer wrote for your car - the one printed in your service logbook or calculated by the car itself. At each interval, specific items fall due: certain filters, fluids, inspections, adjustments. The 30,000 km service is not the same as the 45,000 km service, and neither is “an oil change”.
Done properly by a qualified workshop, a logbook service:
- Keeps your new-car warranty fully intact under Australian Consumer Law - the work matches the manufacturer’s specifications and intervals
- Gets your logbook stamped (and for Mercedes-Benz, the official Digital Service Book updated)
- Protects resale value - a complete logbook history is one of the strongest price supports a used car has
- Catches age-specific items before they fail: brake fluid absorbing moisture, transmission services, coolant life, timing components
Which one do you need?
- Car under warranty? Logbook service, always. Anything less risks a warranty argument.
- European car, any age? Logbook service. Mercedes, BMW and Audi schedules include items a basic service never touches, and skipped items get expensive.
- Older car you plan to keep, on a tight month? A basic service between logbook services is a legitimate way to protect the engine - as long as the logbook items still happen when they fall due.
What it costs here
At Peninsular Motors, logbook servicing for all makes starts from $289 with premium oils and genuine-quality parts - deliberately not the cheapest in Logan, deliberately the most thorough. Mercedes and European logbook servicing from $395, with the factory digital record updated.
