Hybrid and EV Servicing: What Actually Needs Doing?

“EVs don’t need servicing” is half true, which makes it the most expensive kind of true. No oil changes, far fewer moving parts - correct. But hybrids and EVs have their own schedules, their own safety-critical items, and their own ways of punishing neglect.

What still needs doing on an EV

• Brake system care - counterintuitively, EV brakes suffer from underuse. Regenerative braking means the friction brakes can sit barely used, corroding and seizing. Periodic inspection and service keeps them ready for the emergency stop they exist for.
• Coolant systems - most EVs liquid-cool the battery and drive electronics, on manufacturer-scheduled coolant lives. This is not a skip-it item; battery thermal management is the battery’s life insurance.
• Tyres and alignment - instant torque plus battery weight wears tyres faster than a comparable petrol car. Rotation and alignment schedules matter more, not less.
• Cabin filters, wipers, suspension - the unglamorous items age exactly as before.

What hybrids add

Hybrids carry both systems: the petrol engine still needs its oil, filters and logbook schedule, and the electric side adds the items above. Hybrid-specific checks - the high-voltage battery’s cooling path (often an internal filter or vent), the inverter coolant, the 12-volt battery that everything depends on - appear at set intervals in the logbook.

The safety part that isn’t optional

Working around high-voltage systems requires training and the correct equipment - for the technician’s safety and for the car’s warranty. This is genuinely not a corner to cut with the cheapest quote in town.

What you shouldn’t pay for

Anyone quoting engine air filters or spark plugs on a pure EV, “fuel system cleans” on a battery car, or padding a hybrid service with items its schedule doesn’t list. A logbook is a logbook: the manufacturer wrote down what’s due // The right workshop does exactly that, no more and no less.
